Lucy didn’t decompress after her brush with death. She didn’t even shower. For the next few hours, she sat cross-legged and barefoot on Jack’s unmade bed, making calls on his phone until Avery could get a new one delivered, dispensing orders, digging through databases, and firing questions at Jack.

By late afternoon, she had the Bullet Catcher machine in full force searching for every morsel of information about Theo Carpenter, working fast so they could get back to Willow Marsh for dinner.

Until Marilee called and canceled, saying that the justice wasn’t feeling well.

“Fine with me,” Lucy said when she told Jack why Marilee had called. “More time to work on this.”

“Or make a little side trip.” He stood, grabbing the soot-covered jacket she’d flung on a chair. “Come on, let’s go.”

“Where?” she asked, starting to push herself off the bed

“Columbia. It’s a little over two hours, and if we hurry, we’ll catch Eileen after dinner and before she sleeps.”

“I don’t want to go.”

“You don’t? All this work you’ve done, and you don’t even want to meet the woman? Why not?”

Ten different reasons echoed in her head. “We have too much work to do.”

“Make calls in the car.”

“We might have to go back to Willow Marsh at any time.”

“You have a team of experts there. You can be gone a few more hours.”

She blew out a breath. “She’s in mourning, Jack. She just found out her daughter is dead. She wants to be alone.”

This last one got her an incredulous look. “She’s been alone for thirty years.”

When she didn’t move, he tossed the jacket onto the bed. “Stay if you want, Luce. I need to talk to Eileen about when Kristen came to see her.”

So he hadn’t given up on that. “Jack, I told you—”

“Plus, they moved her back to the prison infirmary yesterday, and when I called, I found out the head nurse has quit. If I don’t get over there and tell those imbeciles she’s allergic to strawberries, she’ll be covered in hives by next week.”

Lucy’s mouth fell open a little. “You really care about her.”

“Imagine that. A human heart beating in my hairy chest.” He gathered his stuff and headed to the door, pausing to look at her. “Will you be here when I get back?”

She hesitated just one second, then changed her mind, something she rarely did. “I’ll go with you. But on the way over, you have to tell me why.”

“Why what?”

“Why this particular woman matters so much to you.”

He smiled. “All right, Luce. Let’s go.”

He didn’t tell her that, or anything, for more than an hour. While he drove the straight, boring highway across the state, she watched the sun setting behind the hills on the horizon, and nearly slept.

She must have actually dozed off, because he woke her when he put his hand over hers and said, “You know about Fletch?”

She opened her eyes and looked at him. “What about Fletch?”

“About his childhood.”

“Some. I know his father was rough on him, and that he left home as a teenager and lived in the bush with Aborigines.
